Stephen Joffe

Stephen Joffe is a multi-disciplinary artist working across sound design, acting, music, and writing. A graduate of the National Theatre School of Canada, his sonic and theatrical work has earned him three Dora Mavor Moore Award nominations—two for Outstanding Sound Design (Everything I Wanted To Tell You and NGOMA, both with Citadel & Compagnie) and one for Performance (Tough Jews).

 

As a composer and sound designer, Stephen has created for prominent companies like Factory Theatre, Articus Productions, and Vazari Arts. His film scoring credits include Valerie Buhagiar’s The Anniversary and Dan Slater’s White Night. His music also lives as the driving force behind the indie-rock outfit Birds of Bellwoods, a project that has amassed over 25 million streams and taken him to major festival stages including Osheaga, Festival d’été de Québec, and Mariposa.

 

On screen, Stephen most recently appeared as Lemley in the fifth season of FX’s Fargo. Other notable television and film credits include Alias Grace, Murdoch Mysteries, Slasher, Bang Bang Baby, Life, and Who You Know. His extensive stage credits feature Judith Thompson’s The Crackwalker (Factory Theatre), as well as productions with Canadian Stage and BIBT.

 

An internationally recognized writer, Stephen is a Pushcart Prize nominee and received a High Commendation at the 2026 Poetry Wales Awards. He was a finalist for the 2025 Leonard Cohen Poetry Prize and longlisted for the 2025 Bournemouth Writing Prize. His poetry is published or forthcoming in The Black Warrior Review, CV2, and the Literary Review of Canada, among others.
